The growth of women's football right across the country has allowed females to play without barriers. The popularity of the sport within Geelong saw the number of female teams grow within the Barwon region from 44 in 2017 to 60 in 2018. In the same period, the senior competition increased from 2 to 10 teams who now compete for the Epworth Cup.
Epworth Geelong Chief Executive Officer, Damian Armour spoke of the importance of creating local pathways for women "like women's football in Geelong, Epworth Geelong is rapidly expanding and supporting pathways for women.
"Over 80% of staff are female and we're continuing to build local opportunities within our community.
"With the volume of girls and women taking up local football in Geelong, we look forward to seeing our next generation of specialists, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals take the field."
As a healthcare leader within the region, Epworth Geelong will support AFL Barwon with information on player injuries for coach and trainer seminars throughout the course of the partnership.
