Hands play a vital role in our daily lives, so when we experience problems with them, the impact is significant.
Hand therapy is dedicated to assessing and treating conditions affecting the hand and upper limb which may include recovery from an accident or trauma, chronic problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome or limited use of hands or limbs following surgery.
Following a detailed patient assessment, treatment may include:
- Condition-specific exercises
- Swelling management
- Help with sensitivity from nerve injuries
- Custom splinting
- Adaptive function techniques
- Scar management.
Our speech pathologists can:
- Help diagnose, treat and manage communication and swallowing difficulties which may occur with a variety of neurological impairments and medical conditions
- Assess swallowing disorders using specialised procedures such as videofluoroscopy and fibre optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing.
- Offer assistance to people interested in accent modification (improved pronunciation) and professional voice use.
- Assessment and education of people with suspected changes in their sense of smell which can occur following brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, facial fracture or surgery. The Olfactory Impairment Clinic is an Australian-first service for individuals with a reported change to their olfaction (smell) and associated taste changes.
Dietitians understand how food and drinks help nourish both healthy individuals and those with medical conditions. Our dietitians are qualified to provide evidence-based nutrition services, dietary counselling, medical nutrition therapy and food service management.
You may be looking to modify your weight, increase your energy or change your lifestyle. Our dietitians also give advice on dieting and the best way to set up healthy eating plans for your children or family.
If you are preparing for or recovering from bariatric surgery, our team will work in conjunction with your surgeon to establish goals pre or post bariatric surgery and can keep your GP informed of your progress and goals.
Changes in your health, chronic illness and traumatic events can have significant adverse impacts on your thinking, moods and general functioning. Our experienced specialist psychologists can help you to understand these impacts, develop effective ways to cope with difficulties and make changes to relieve problems and enhance your well-being.
Our psychologists promote well-being and personal development by integrating science, theory and clinical knowledge. The goal of working with the clinical psychologist is to understand, prevent, and relieve psychologically based distress or dysfunction.
Your psychologist will be guided by your goals and targets for change. Sessions will involve psychological assessment, clinical formulation and targeted strategies to aide in emotional well-being.
Mobility is everything, and whether your movement is limited by pain, injury or a recent operation, physiotherapy can help you get back to your daily life as soon as possible.
Starting with a thorough assessment to determine your unique needs, our physiotherapists use evidence-based techniques to provide a tailored treatment plan aimed at alleviating pain and restoring function for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including lower back and neck pain, joint problems and sports injuries.
If you have private health insurance, you may be able to access your ancillary or extras cover to fund treatment through the Epworth Allied Health Clinic. Alternatively, you can choose to self-fund, and pay each appointment upfront.
GPs can also refer patients for Medicare subsidised treatment using the 'Chronic Disease Management' scheme for Allied Health or the ‘The Better Access to Mental Health Care’ scheme for psychology services.
