Respiratory medicine encompasses diseases of the respiratory system, including the upper airway, the lungs, the chest wall and the ventilatory control system.

Examples of such diseases are:

  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Chronic cough
  • Chronic bronchitis
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Emphysema
  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Pneumonia
  • Pulmonary vascular disorders (affect the circulation of the blood through the lungs)
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Tuberculosis

A specialist in Respiratory Medicine will often perform lung function testing to aid diagnosis and treat of respiratory disorders.

Other services include bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, pleural ultrasound and intervention.
