This program runs at multiple sites and has various intakes throughout the year. PIP runs over 16 weeks and focuses on introducing the concepts and principles of preoperative nursing across various specialties within the theatre environment.

About the program
- A formative performance appraisal will take place at 6 weeks, with a summative performance appraisal occurring at 16 weeks
- Combines theory, simulation and clinical placements
- Covers perioperative speciality areas including scrub/scout or anaesthetics/PACU
- Each site will provide support personnel for the course participant
- Enables students to develop a basic understanding of the principles and practice of perioperative nursing and ensure they have attained a basic level of competency to work in a safe and effective manner after completion of the program
- Introduces the concepts of perioperative nursing to registered and enrolled nurses
- Pre-reading material will be provided prior to study days
- Study days will be facilitated by Epworth perioperative educators from across all Epworth sites
Pre-requisites
- 12 months experience post registration is essential
- A minimum of 12 months in an acute hospital is desirable
- Have current registration with the APHRA as a Registered Nurse or an IV Endorsed Enrolled Nurse
- Must be able to attend all study days throughout the course
Course structure
The theoretical component of this course includes face-to-face, online and practical workshops.

- Aseptic technique - Instrumentation and equipment
- ACORN/ANZCA - Scrubbing, gowning and gloving
- Legal and ethical issues - Maintaining a sterile field
- Nursing roles within the department - Principles of Anaesthesia
- Safety in the operating theatre - Airway management
- Sterilisation and decontamination - Anaesthesia emergencies
