The program is designed to develop your clinical knowledge, enhance skills and assessment and progress clinical decision making.
Nurses are given the opportunity to build confidence in identifying and managing deteriorating patients and offers the opportunity for you to produce a learning folio of work that is recognised by Deakin University and will provide you with recognition of prior learning for one unit of the
postgraduate certificate course.
The program enhances your ability to deliver excellence in patient care within your chosen area and allows potential for career progression.
The Critical Care Stream program
Delivered using a blended learning method; combination of self-directed online learning and classroom-based learning.
- Seven study days are taught over a six-month period utilising case studies, group work and clinical simulation.
- Professional development is assessed through completion of clinical hurdles and academic assessments; short oral presentation, written assignment, written examination.
- Successful program completion recognises 1 credit point towards post graduate pathways at Deakin University.

- A current registered nurse qualification with APHRA and be a permanent resident or Australian citizen
- Completed a Graduate year (by commencement of the program)
- Have had a discussion and pre-approval of application obtained by a Nursing Unit Manager
- Hold a position within Epworth in a clinical department

The Peri-operative stream program
Epworth is committed to the support and growth of peri-operative services, through the development and recruitment opportunities offered to registered nurses who have a desire to develop their careers into this area.
The Peri-operative Stream program is structured to support the transition of AHPRA registered nurses into the peri-operative environment, designed to meet the specific theoretical and practical requirements of those nurses.
The Peri-operative stream is tailored by site to introduce nurses to the theatre environment. Two streams of study are offered:
- Anaesthetics and recovery
- Intraoperative nursing (scrub nurse and scout nurse)
Utilising a blended learning strategy with formal assessments undertaken throughout the program, participants have access to guided supervision and support from their clinical supports and clinical educators.
Study days are facilitated by the perioperative clinical educators at each site. Nurses attend study days at their site, learning about and developing the skills associate with their stream.
Eligible applicants must have
- Have current AHPRA registration as a Registered Nurse or an IV Endorsed Enrolled Nurse
- Australian citizenship or permanent residency
- Have been qualified and gained 12 months experience post registration
- During the last 12 months, experience gained working in an acute tertiary setting is desirable.
- Must be committed to attendance of all program study days
