Referring to neurosciences

Our patients are at the centre of everything we do.

Our Find a Doctor directory allows you to contact an Epworth accredited specialist for your GP to refer you to.

A referral from your GP, a Specialist or other health professional is required to access most Epworth services and some can be called directly by the patient including our Allied Health Clinic, GP Clinic, Men’s Health Clinic and Jean Hailes at Epworth Freemasons as well as our Breast Services, Epworth Sports and Exercise Medicine Group and Epworth HealthCheck.

Neurosciences at Epworth Eastern

Rapid TIA referral service at Epworth Eastern

A Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA)

TIA is a temporary blockage of blood to the brain, with symptoms often mimicking a stroke.

Unlike a stroke, the symptoms will often disappear or lessen. However, TIA is a high-risk warning sign for stroke within 90 days, with the highest risk (reproted to be up to 50 per cent) occurring in the first two days.

Epworth Eastern's neuroscience unit is a unique service that provides rapid response to a TIA and potentially lifesaving intervention before a stroke occurs.

The unit provides rapid intervention, diagnosis and treatment for patients who present to their GPs with a suspected Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA), avoiding a potential lengthy stay in an emergency department.

SUSPECT - GPs can phone 1800 792 778 for direct, over-the-phone admission with patients seen by a neurologist within 24 hours

DETECT - The unit is a multi-disciplinary team of neurologists, a specialist acute neurosciences clinical nurse consultant and a dedicated allied health team with rapid access to radiology including MRI, pathology, cardiac investigations, vascular surgeons and cardiologists, as required.

PREVENT - The unit's specialist team will seamlessly coordinate the diagnosis, treatment and management of your patient to ensure the best possible outcomes. GPs are provided with extensive patient follow-ups, at three, six and 12 months as recommended by best care guidelines, as well as a follow-up phone call one week post discharge.
